A slipped disk requires immediate treatment

You can suffer many types of injuries on the job, with those to your back or neck among the most serious. A slipped disk, for example, can alter your health in many ways. Furthermore, this injury calls for immediate treatment. You don't want to worsen your condition by trying to treat it on your own.

While any neck or back injury requires medical care, some are more serious. If you experience weakness in your arms or legs or loss of bladder or bowel control immediately after your injury, don't wait to call 911.

Here are some basic things to do during your recovery:

  • Use a cold compress to alleviate pain and discomfort.
  • Take anti-inflammatory medication as directed by your doctor.
  • Get plenty of rest.
  • Follow the guidance of your medical team.

While most people with a slipped disk are able to make a full recovery within six weeks, this isn't always the case. Depending on the severity of the injury, your age and other health conditions, it may take much longer to regain your former level of health. Also, while not common, there are times when a slipped disk requires surgery.

If you suffer a slipped disk injury on the job, report the incident to your employer and seek immediate treatment. As you work closely with your medical team to speed up your recovery, don't hesitate to learn more about your legal rights under the workers' compensation system. If your slipped disk is keeping you away from work, you may be able to receive benefits until you can once again return to your job.
