Riggers: Beware of falls on the job

On Behalf of | Aug 13, 2018 | Test Category |

If you work as a rigger, the fast-paced environment keeps you on your toes at all times. Unfortunately, there are also many risks of working as a rigger — some of which increase during particular activities. For example, when conducting a lift or preparing a load you’re often exposed to fall hazards.

As a rigger, you should beware of the many things that can cause a fall. You should also keep in mind that there are devices you can use to prevent trouble, such as:

  • Guardrails on deck edges or openings
  • Stair rails
  • Proper attire, such as shoes that promote good traction

Something else to consider is a wet or slippery surface. You never know when inclement weather or water from a nearby body of water will wreak havoc.

When working in close proximity to water, make sure you always have access to an approved personal floatation device. Just as important, know where the device is located so you can get to it in a hurry should you need it.

A fall doesn’t always result in an injury, but it could. If you fall on the job, stay where you are until help arrives. Also, report the incident to your employer, as you want your company to know what went wrong and that you were indeed injured at work.

After they’ve provided you with any necessary treatment, your medical team can help you decide what to do next. If they tell you to avoid work for the time being, file a claim for workers’ compensation benefits to help you get by financially.
