Regardless of the company you work for, the industry or your position, you should never run into issues as the result of your religion. Unfortunately, religious discrimination remains a problem throughout the country.
Religious discrimination involves treating a person, including both employees and job candidates, differently because of their religious beliefs. There are laws in place to protect people of all religions, including but not limited to Christianity, Islam, Buddhism and Judaism.
Examples of religious discrimination
There is more than one form of religious discrimination, with this often associated with compensation, hiring, termination, promotions, training, benefits, job responsibilities and layoffs.
Harassment is also a concern
Just the same as religious discrimination, harassing a person because of their religion is also against the law.
There are many forms of harassment, such as making offensive remarks about a person because of the religion they practice.
Segregation is against the law
It’s not out of the question for an employer to get the idea to segregate workers of a particular religion. Title VII prohibits segregation, such as requiring an employee to work in a noncustomer facing role.
If, for any reason, you believe you’re the victim of religious discrimination, take the time to better understand what’s happening and how to make things right.
Once you bring this issue to your company’s attention, you’ll have a better idea of what to do next.
If things don’t get better after filing a formal complaint, continue to take notes in regard to the discrimination. This will put you in position for success should you need to take additional action in the future.
